Toronto Sinfonietta Concerto Competition for Young Musicians
In 2006, the Toronto Sinfonietta has undertaken a new and exciting project - the first annual Toronto Sinfonietta Concerto Competition for young musicians. Three instruments are featured in this season's competition - piano, violin and flute.
The purpose of the competition is to choose young musicians to perform as soloists with the Toronto Sinfonietta at a Competition Gala Concert to be held in November.
We believe that this event - which will provide a unique opportunity for talented young musicians to perform a concerto with a professional orchestra - will become a permanent feature of the Toronto music scene.
Although the auditions are open to young musicians of all backgrounds, our main partner in this first competition has been the Chinese community. As a result, many of the competitors are members of that community.
This year's Jury consists of the following prominent musicians and teachers:
Jury Chairman: Matthew Jaskiewicz, Music Director of the Toronto Sinfonietta
Piano: Marietta Orlov and Alexander Kats
Violin: Bronson Kwan and Youri Zaidenberg
Flute: Milan Brunner and Joan Brown
The second round of auditions will be held in the first week of October 2006. In November the winners of the three categories will perform with the Toronto Sinfonietta at a Gala Concert at the Isabel Bader Theatre.
The second Toronto Sinfonietta Concerto Competition will be held in 2007, with the first round of auditions in June and the second round in September. The Gala Concert will take place in November 2007.
The application deadline for next year's competition is February 1, 2007. The rules of the second competition, including the instruments to be featured, will be announced before September 2006.
