SECOND TORONTO SINFONIETTA CONCERTO COMPETITION 2007
For the best performance of solo concerto with orchestra
Purpose of the competition: to provide young musicians with a unique opportunity to be soloists at the Toronto Sinfonietta 2007 Gala Concert.

INSTRUMENT AND AGE CATEGORIES
- Piano, under 16 years
- Piano, 16 to 19 years
- Violin, under 16 years
- Violin, 16 to 19 years
- Woodwinds, under 16 years
- Woodwinds, 16 to 19 years
* To qualify for the under 16 categories, candidates must have been born
on or after September 1, 1991.
* To qualify for the 16 to 19 categories, candidates must have been born
between September 1, 1988, and August 31, 1991.
* For the purpose of the competition, the following instruments are considered to be
woodwinds: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon.
REPERTOIRE
First round:
- A candidate must perform three contrasting selections of his or her choice as follows:
one study,
one baroque or classical selection,
one romantic or modern selection.
- The duration of the performance must not exceed 15 minutes.
- All pieces must be played from memory.
- Repeats are not to be played.
Second round:
- A candidate must prepare one movement of a concerto or a single-movement work for solo instrument with orchestra,
- It is strongly recommended that candidates choose a baroque, classical or early romantic concerto, however more modern music is acceptable, as well.
- In all cases, the choice of the concerto is subject to approval by the Music Director of the Toronto Sinfonietta before any application can be accepted. Factors such as orchestration requirements, availability of music, and time needed for rehearsals will be considered.
ADDITIONAL RULES
- Competitors must provide their own accompanists at each round of auditions.
- Competitors must provide one original copy of their music for use by the adjudicators.
- Recordings will not be accepted in lieu of live performances.
WINNERS
- Normally, a winner will be chosen in each age and instrument category, however the Jury reserves the right not to choose one.
- The winners will be invited to play at the Gala Concert with the Toronto Sinfonietta.
- Some other finalists may also be invited to play.
- Winners and finalists may be offered more performance opportunities in the future.
- The Competition Jury will be composed of prominent musicians and teachers under the chairmanship of Matthew Jaskiewicz, Music Director, Toronto Sinfonietta.
COMPETITION SCHEDULE
- First round of auditions: June 25 - 29. Results to be announced by June 30, 2007.
- Second round of auditions: September 24 - 28, 2007. Final results will be announced after the conclusion of all auditions.
- Gala Concert November 10, 2007. The selected performers will be required to attend several rehearsals.

Each submission must include:
- a completed application form,
- a short biography and a photograph of the candidate,
- a registration fee of $100 (cheque or money order) payable to the Toronto Sinfonietta.
Applications must be received by the Competition Offices no later than April 27, 2007.
