TORONTO SINFONIETTA CHOPIN PIANO COMPETITION
2009-2010
For the best performance of a solo concerto by Fryderyk Chopin with orchestra
Purpose of the competition:
- to provide young musicians with a unique opportunity to be soloists at the Toronto Sinfonietta 2010 Gala Concert.
- to celebrate the music of the Polish composer Fryderyk Chopin
Following is information about our 2006 competition, 2007 competition, and our 2008 competition.
Results of previous competitions can be found for 2006, 2007, and 2008
AGE CATEGORIES
- under 16 years
- 16 to 21 years
~ To qualify for the under 16 categories, candidates must have been born
on or after December 1, 1993.
~ To qualify for the 16 to 21 categories, candidates must have been born
between December 1, 1988, and November 30, 1993.
COMPETITION SCHEDULE
- Application deadline July 31, 2009
- First round of auditions: December 1 - 5, 2009
- Second round of auditions: January 3 - 7, 2010
- Finals / Gala concert: February 6, 2010

First round:
One Mazurka: choice of the performer
One Nocturne: D flat Major op. 27 #2, E Major op. 62 #2, or F sharp Major op. 15 #2
One Polonaise: C sharp Minor op. 26 #1, F sharp Minor op. 44, or A flat Major op. 53
Second round:
One Ballade choice of the performer
One Scherzo choice of the performer
Finals / Gala Concert:
One movement of Concerto No. 1 or Concerto No. 2
ADDITIONAL RULES
- Competitors must provide one original copy of their music for use by the adjudicators.
- Recordings will not be accepted in lieu of live performances.
WINNERS
Under 16 category
- Two finalists will be selected to play solo at the Finals / Gala Concert. The winner will be declared at the end of the concert.
16 - 21 category
- Four finalists will be selected to play with the orchestra at the Finals / Gala Concert. One winner will be declared at the end of the concert.

- on the Toronto Sinfonietta website,
- at the Royal Conservatory of Music and selected music stores & studios in the GTA.
Each submission must include:
- a completed application form,
- a short biography and a passport size photograph of the candidate,
- a registration fee of:
$90 - under 16 category
$150 - 16 to 21 category
Cheque or money order payable to the Toronto Sinfonietta.
APPLICATION DEADLINE
Applications must be received by the Competition Office no later than July 31, 2009.
